Samsung Releases 990 Pro Gen 4 SSD: Calls it “The Ultimate SSD”

Samsung has released its all-new PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD called Samsung 990 Pro. It looks like an upgraded version of the older Samsung 980 Pro. The company claims that the 990 Pro can offer 40 to 55% more read/write speed compared to the 980 Pro.

It will be capable of reaching 7450/6900 MB/s read/write speed. We can say that this SSD will offer you the maximum of what you can achieve with the PCIe 4.0 interface.

They have focused this SSD for content creators, video editing, 3D editing, data analysis, etc. Obviously, the target audience is going to be high-end consumers.

The company is also talking about the power efficiency of its product on its official page. So, as you know that Samsung 980 Pro uses around 1 Watt per 877MB, and this one is going to offer 1319 MB per watt of power usage. So, it is around 50% higher power efficiency.

The random read/write performance is also said to be more than 55% increased as compared to the 980 Pro.

The Specifications are looking just amazing. I am pretty impressed with the max. sequential read/write speed. Also, the random speed is phenomenal.

Samsung 990 Pro is using Samsung V-NAND 3-bit MLC Flash. The controller is Samsung’s own product whose name isn’t disclosed till now. The total weight of this product is 9 grams. If we talk about reliability, Samsung 990 Pro is coming up with 1.5 Million hours of total usage time.

According to this official tweet, Samsung 990 Pro is coming this October. So, you will most probably be able to buy it by the end of October. By the time I am writing this article, no other dates are released. But, I will keep you updated for sure.

There are some other Gen 4 NVMe SSDs out there in the market with almost the same speed. Some examples are Acer GM7000 Predator, Adata Legend 960, PNY CS3140, etc. So, I don’t think there is something very special about this launch. However, because this promise is coming from Samsung, we can expect good stability and power efficiency.

All these things can be proved when we see real-world benchmarks. Until then, please don’t forget to share your views in the comment section.
